The broad silver plaque carries a hand-modelled mask set beside a natural amber cabochon in an asymmetrical composition characteristic of Kramer. Oxidised details, sculpted surfaces and the substantial construction give the ring a presence closely associated with studio jewellery and Scandinavian-influenced modernist silverwork.
G. Kramer jun. was a German silversmith's workshop in Ribnitz, where Walter Kramer took over the family business in 1932 and developed the silver and amber jewellery that became known as Fischlandschmuck. Original pieces from the workshop are recognised by the GK or Kramer Ribnitz marks and are distinguished by hand-worked silver, sculptural motifs and amber used as an integral part of the composition. Surviving examples include several mask rings with different stone combinations, placing this ring within Georg Kramer's well-known series of figurative designs.
Here, the mask rises as an independent sculptural relief against an oxidised rectangular background, while the amber serves as the composition's concentrated point of colour. Kramer combines sculpture and jewellery into a carefully balanced artistic object appreciated both for its design and for its place within the tradition of twentieth-century German silverwork.
The ring naturally draws the eye and pairs equally well with black clothing, linen, wool or a minimalist wardrobe where artistic details are allowed to stand out. For collectors of German design silver and Georg Kramer, it represents one of the workshop's more distinctive figurative models.
