German Retro Cocktail Ring with Light Blue Spinel
A substantial German retro cocktail ring in gilt 835 silver with a light blue faceted spinel and a heavily sculpted setting.
The stone occupies almost the entire head of the ring and is cut in a square, lightly octagonal form. Its cool, clear blue colour has a calm depth across the broad faceted surface. Heavy rounded scrolls and cast floral formations rise around the stone, building volume in several directions.
The underside of the setting opens into a pierced pattern that becomes visible when the ring is turned. The construction is carefully worked from the sides and beneath, reinforcing the ring’s sculptural character.
The substantial setting and gilt surfaces reflect the German post-war jewellery tradition of the late 1940s and early 1950s. Large decorative stones were frequently used in gilt silver during this period to create expressive cocktail rings. The stone is probably synthetic spinel, an established material for large coloured stones in this type of jewellery.
Weighing 4.9 g, the ring has a strong presence on the hand. The gilding shows visible signs of wear and age, giving the surface a soft and authentic vintage character.
