Antique Trachten Necklace with Bohemian Garnet Glass
An antique South German Trachten necklace of the Kugelkette type, composed of five parallel ball chains with Baroque-inspired ornaments and faceted Bohemian garnet glass.
The necklace has a clear connection to South German traditional dress, historicist ornament and the Bohemian tradition of garnet-coloured glass. The five ball chains create a dense yet flexible construction, while the richly decorated elements bring the design together in a characteristic Trachten form.
The Kugelkette is a classic form of South German Trachten necklace developed within the Bavarian and Alpine dress tradition. Several parallel ball chains are joined by richly ornamented elements inspired by Baroque floral forms and historic silverwork.
This type of jewellery became an established part of festive dress in Bavaria and the German-speaking regions around Bohemia and Austria. Local workshops produced versions in silver as well as alpacca and nickel silver set with Bohemian garnet glass.
The necklace brings the five rows of chain together in a large central medallion, with smaller rosette-shaped ornaments along the sides and a matching pendant suspended from the extension chain. The central medallion is worked with Baroque scrolls, floral forms, bead-like details and a central piece of faceted Bohemian garnet glass.
The same decorative vocabulary continues across the smaller ornaments, where the dark red garnet glass forms deep accents against the oxidised white metal. The combination of nickel silver, ball chains and Bohemian garnet glass is characteristic of early Trachtenschmuck from Bavaria and Bohemia.
